Microsoft has unveiled a major US$5.5 billion investment plan for Singapore, spanning 2025 to 2029. The funding will boost cloud and AI infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital governance in the country. Alongside this, over 200,000 tertiary students will gain free access to Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot for a full year.
The announcement came as Microsoft's Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, reaffirmed the company's long-term commitment to Singapore. He described the nation as a key player in global digital leadership. This latest investment builds on Microsoft's broader strategy, which has seen datacentre expansions in over 60 countries since 2020, with the largest growth in the USA, UAE, Japan, and Europe.
The funding will also support Microsoft Elevate, a programme aimed at training educators and nonprofit leaders in responsible AI adoption. Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary highlighted the growing importance of foundational AI skills for both students and teachers. He noted that these skills are now critical in education and future workforces. In addition to infrastructure and training, Microsoft has signed new green energy agreements in 26 countries. These power purchase agreements (PPAs) align with its sustainability goals while expanding digital capabilities worldwide.
The US$5.5 billion investment will strengthen Singapore's position as a hub for cloud computing and AI development. Students, educators, and nonprofit organisations will benefit from expanded training and free access to advanced tools. Microsoft's continued expansion reflects its focus on global digital growth and sustainable energy solutions.
