Milano Cortina 2026 kicks off with youngest torchbearers leading climate charge
The 25th Winter Olympic Games, Milano Cortina 2026, officially opened in Milan on Friday. Among the highlights was the participation of twin brothers Arthur and Carter Li, who became the youngest torchbearers ever to represent Shenzhen. Their involvement underscored the event's strong focus on sustainability and youth engagement.
Arthur and Carter Li, students at SZMS Nanshan Innovation School, carried the Olympic flame in recognition of their climate advocacy. The brothers, who have spoken at the 28th and 29th UN Climate Change Conferences, were chosen for their long-standing commitment to environmental action. Since the age of 12, they have led initiatives urging young people to address climate change.
The torch they carried, named Essential, aligns with the Games' green ethos. Made from recycled materials and powered by bio-LPG, it significantly reduces carbon emissions. This innovation reflects the broader sustainability goals of Milano Cortina 2026, where 90% of venues are either pre-existing or temporary structures.
Organisers have positioned these Games as the most environmentally sustainable in Olympic history. Around 90 countries are set to compete, continuing the tradition of global participation seen in previous Winter Olympics, such as Beijing 2022.
The Li brothers now aim to merge their climate vision with the Green Olympics philosophy. They are calling on young people worldwide to take measurable steps in combating environmental challenges.
Milano Cortina 2026 has begun with a clear emphasis on sustainability and youth leadership. The Li brothers' role in the torch relay highlights the event's dedication to climate action. Their ongoing initiatives and the Games' eco-friendly measures set a concrete example for future large-scale sporting events.
