A controversial murder investigation has unfolded in the Alpine village of Inner Ained after environmental official Konrad Kofler was found dead in Lake Tristach. Initially thought to be an accident, the case took a darker turn when evidence suggested foul play. The victim had faced fierce opposition for blocking a snowmaking project, sparking tensions in the tight-knit community.

Konrad Kofler, head of the local environmental office, was discovered lifeless in Lake Tristach on 20 February 2026. His blood alcohol level initially led investigators to suspect a tragic accident. However, forensic tests revealed the water in his lungs did not match the lake's composition, pointing to murder.

Kofler had been travelling to Inner Ained to assess a proposed snowmaking system near Passo Gardena. His repeated rejections of the project, citing risks to protected waterfowl in the Palü reservoir, had angered developers and lobbyists. Accusations of obstructing economic growth and ignoring compromise offers had escalated into threats before his death.

Chief Inspector Martin Steiner arrived in the village to lead the inquiry, setting up at Maria's guesthouse. The case forms the basis of Yesterday's Snow, the latest instalment in ORF's Landkrimi series, which explores regional tensions through crime narratives.
