New Digital Tool Eases Sustainability Reporting for SMEs Under EU Rules

A new digital tool has launched to simplify sustainability reporting for small and medium-sized businesses. Designed to meet growing demands from banks and large corporations, it helps companies comply with legal requirements in a structured way. The tool aligns with the EU's voluntary VSME standard, adopted in mid-2025 to support SMEs in reporting environmental and social data.

The tool provides a step-by-step approach for businesses to document their sustainability efforts. It includes a preliminary checklist, guided questionnaires, and generates a final report that meets the European VSME standard. While the initial setup requires more work, future updates will focus only on refreshing key figures.

Trade associations and craft chambers have trained advisors ready to assist companies with using the tool. It is tailored for sectors like body shops, paint businesses, specialty vehicle manufacturers, and commercial vehicle operators.

Under the EU's Omnibus Regulation, large corporations can only request sustainability data from non-reporting SMEs if they follow the voluntary VSME framework. This means broader or unrelated data requests can be legally refused. The standard itself remains new, with no official count yet of how many medium-sized EU companies have published reports under it as of March 2026.

The tool aims to reduce the burden of sustainability reporting for SMEs while ensuring compliance with legal and financial expectations. With support from advisors and a streamlined process, businesses can now respond to data requests more efficiently. The voluntary VSME standard continues to gain traction as a practical solution for future reporting needs.
