150 Hidden Cameras - New Documentary Unveils the Hidden Battles of Eastern Germany's Deer

A new wildlife documentary, Earth's Wonders: The Secret World of Animals, will premiere on ARD this March. Filmed across Eastern Germany's varied landscapes, it reveals the hidden lives of red deer, wolves, and otters. Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gebauer spent years capturing these animals in their natural habitats.

The documentary follows red deer stags as they clash during the autumn rut, their battles echoing through the forests. Wolves also feature prominently, stalking deer but sometimes losing their kills to wild boars. Meanwhile, otters are shown building reed lodges to shelter their young from the winter cold.

Gebauer, known for his acclaimed wildlife films, returned to his homeland for this project. Over four years, he placed 150 hidden cameras to record the animals without disturbance. The result is a collection of rare, intimate footage showcasing Eastern Germany's ecological diversity.

The film will air on ARD at 8:15 PM on March 9. Exact filming locations and the number of nature reserves used remain unverified.

Viewers can expect breathtaking scenes of wildlife behaviour rarely seen before. The documentary highlights the region's rich ecosystems, from deer battles to otter dens. Gebauer's work promises to bring these hidden worlds into sharp focus.
