Nizhny Novgorod Oblast declares high wildfire alert with strict bans in place
Nizhny Novgorod Oblast faces a heightened wildfire risk from June 2 to 5, 2023, with authorities issuing strict safety measures. The region’s Department of Urban Improvement will launch a dedicated hotline on June 5 to address concerns about fire hazards in urban forests. Residents are being urged to follow precautions as dry conditions increase the danger of blazes. A high (Class 4) wildfire risk has been declared across northern forests and peatlands in the oblast. In response, a ban on entering wooded areas remains in place, and residents must avoid activities that could spark fires. Burning rubbish in gardens, lighting bonfires, or discarding lit cigarettes and matches in forests is strictly forbidden.
Oily rags and glass bottles pose a particular threat, as they can act like magnifying lenses and ignite dry vegetation. Drivers have also been warned to maintain safe distances and avoid sudden braking, which could create sparks near flammable grass. To stay informed, locals can download the *EMERCOM of Russia* mobile app for real-time emergency alerts. If a wildfire is spotted, immediate calls to the fire department are required. During power outages, electric flashlights should be used instead of open flames to prevent accidental fires. The new hotline, operating from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, will offer guidance on sanitary measures in urban forests. Residents can reach it at +7 (831) 228-01-68 starting June 5.
The hotline and safety measures aim to reduce fire risks during the high-danger period. Residents must comply with restrictions to prevent wildfires from spreading. Authorities continue monitoring conditions and will update precautions as needed.
