Nizhny Novgorod tests emergency water security in major pipeline drill

A joint emergency drill will take place at Nizhny Novgorod's Sludinskaya Water Treatment Plant on March 30. The exercise involves Nizhny Novgorod Vodokanal PJSC and the regional branch of Russia's Emergencies Ministry. Its goal is to test how well authorities can secure drinking water if a pipeline fails in one of the city's districts. The drill will focus on coordinating response measures between the water supplier, disaster protection teams, and local government. A unified action plan will be created during the session to streamline cooperation in future emergencies.

After the exercises, officials from regional Emergencies Ministry centres will tour the Sludinskaya plant. They will observe its water production and purification systems, which combine ozone, ultraviolet treatment, and chloramines—a method unique in Russia. The exact number of similar joint drills held nationwide over the past five years remains unclear. However, this event marks a specific effort to prepare for potential water supply disruptions in Nizhny Novgorod.

The March 30 exercises will assess the city's readiness to handle pipeline failures. A finalised action plan will outline roles for Vodokanal, the Emergencies Ministry, and the city administration. The tour of the Sludinskaya plant will also highlight its advanced purification technology.
