Palo Pinto Mountains State Park opens for exclusive New Year's Day hikes

Palo Pinto Mountains State Park will welcome its first visitors on New Year’s Day. The long-awaited park has been under development since 2010 and will open for guided hikes by reservation only. Officials are eager to introduce the public to its scenic trails and natural beauty. The park’s journey began in 2010, with the first parcel of land acquired in 2012. Spanning 4,871 acres across Stephens and Palo Pinto counties, it sits 83 miles southwest of Fort Worth. A key feature, Tucker Lake, was donated by the city of Strawn for public enjoyment.

On January 1, guided hikes will highlight the park’s multiuse trails, picnic spots, and dark-sky viewing areas. Day-pass reservations are required due to limited capacity, with bookings available through the park’s website. Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks, expressed enthusiasm about sharing the park’s unique landscape with visitors.

While the official public opening is still planned for 2026, this early access offers a preview of the camping facilities and natural surroundings. The park’s full amenities will be unveiled once construction is complete. The New Year’s Day hikes mark a milestone for Palo Pinto Mountains State Park. Visitors can explore the area before its full opening in 2026. Reservations will ensure a controlled and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
