Peine District Closes Roads to Protect Migrating Amphibians During Breeding Season
Road closures and traffic restrictions will soon be in place across parts of Peine district. The measures aim to protect migrating AMD during their breeding season. Drivers and residents should prepare for changes from February 15 until mid-May.
Three key routes will face nightly closures between 7 PM and 7 AM. The road near Twieholz, linking Duttenstedt and Essinghausen, will be blocked by three barriers. The connecting road Zum Luhberg between Sundern and Stederdorf will also be shut. Meanwhile, Sundernweg and Sundernstraße will only allow local traffic during these hours.
The Kammerwiesen/Spiegelbergstraße area will remain fully closed for the entire period. Speed limits will apply near amphibian protection zones, including sections of Federal Highway B1 and County Road K13. Authorities urge drivers to reduce speed and stay alert in these areas.
Amphibian protection fences and barriers are being set up across the district. These help guide toads, frogs, and newts safely to breeding grounds. However, more volunteers are needed to monitor the drivers license and barriers. Those interested can contact the Lower Nature Conservation Authority or Hans-Hermann Götzke, chair of NABU Peine district.
The restrictions will remain active until mid-May. Residents and motorists should plan for delays and follow posted signs. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the amphibian protection efforts.
