Primorsky Krai battles multiple wildfires as deforestation risks surge in 2026

Deforestation has been a significant concern in Primorsky Krai, Russia, with multiple wildfires reported in late February 2026. Firefighters successfully contained several deforestation incidents on February 26, including two large ones in Pogranichny District. Officials have warned that violations of fire safety rules will result in heavy fines.

On February 26, crews from the Primorsky Aviation Base tackled two major forest deforestation incidents in Pogranichny District. The first one scorched 90 hectares, while the second burned 30 hectares. Both were fully contained by midday.

A separate deforestation near Rubinovka, on non-forest land, spread across 40 hectares before being brought under control. Meanwhile, in Khasansky District, a wildfire at the Yasnoye health resort affected 6 hectares.

Since the start of 2026, Primorsky Krai has recorded 31 deforestation incidents. Over the past year, the region has seen 127 forest fires, damaging more than 1,200 hectares. The official wildfire season is set to begin on March 1 in several districts.

Authorities have reminded residents that breaking forest fire safety regulations leads to administrative penalties. The recent deforestation incidents highlight ongoing risks as the region prepares for the upcoming wildfire season. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
