Quasimodo the seal pup defies odds with a forever home in Finland

A seal pup with a rare facial deformity has found a permanent home at Finland's Tulen Rehabilitation Center. Named Quasimodo, the young animal was admitted on March 16 with severe abnormalities, including a crooked nose and an inability to fully close its mouth. Despite the challenges, the pup has defied expectations and will now receive lifelong care.

Quasimodo arrived at the center with a damaged cheek, uneven lips, and only one functional nostril. The remaining nostril had widened to help the pup breathe, compensating for the missing one. Vets also discovered a large amount of sand in its mouth upon arrival.

The center initially suspected the deformities resulted from trauma combined with a possible genetic condition. Under normal veterinary guidelines, such cases often lead to euthanasia, as release into the wild would be impossible and survival unlikely. However, the team decided against this option after securing an agreement for the seal's long-term care. Instead of rushing to extreme measures, the staff gave Quasimodo time to recover. Their patience paid off—the pup has since thrived, earning a permanent place at the rehabilitation center.

Quasimodo's survival marks a rare success for an animal with such severe deformities. The seal will remain under the care of the Tulen Rehabilitation Center, where its unique condition will no longer threaten its future. The decision to provide lifelong support ensures the pup's safety and well-being for years to come.
