A daylong bird fair took place at Rajshahi University to highlight the importance of protecting local and migratory birds. Organised by the RU Bird Conservation Club, the event drew students, teachers, and children from nearby schools. Its theme, 'Birds are the beauty of nature and companions of joy – let them live', aimed to raise awareness about conservation efforts on campus and beyond.
Vice-chancellor Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib opened the fair, which featured a range of activities. Exhibitions showcased different bird species, while displays highlighted habitats across the university grounds. Visitors could also observe live birds, explore photographic exhibitions, and watch video presentations about avian life.
Fine arts students contributed original artworks, and children took part in drawing competitions. Open quiz sessions tested knowledge about birds, with organisers stressing the need to avoid disturbing them. Many species nesting or visiting the campus—especially around the university lakes and Narkelbaria area—remain unfamiliar to students, despite their ecological role.
Winter brings large numbers of migratory birds to the region, yet habitat disruption risks driving them away. The fair's core message urged attendees to protect natural spaces, ensuring birds can thrive without interference.
The event combined education with hands-on engagement, from art and quizzes to direct observation of campus wildlife. By connecting students with local bird species, organisers hoped to foster long-term conservation habits. The fair also underscored how small actions, like reducing disturbances, can help preserve the university's ecological balance.
