Baby Chimpanzee Born at Hellabrunn Zoo - Rare Baby Chimpanzee Born at Munich Zoo After 20-Year Wait
A baby chimpanzee has been born at Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, marking the first such birth there in over two decades. The newborn belongs to the critically endangered Central African subspecies and is currently in excellent health under its mother's care.
The baby arrived to parents Zenta and Jambo, both Central African chimpanzees native to regions like the Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon. Jambo had joined Hellabrunn just last year through the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which supports conservation efforts for threatened species.
Zoo director Rasem Baban shared his excitement over the new arrival, highlighting its significance for the zoo and the subspecies. The baby's sex remains unknown for now, but visitors can already spot the infant in the Rainforest House alongside its parents. The family also has access to private, secluded areas when they need time away from public view.
The birth strengthens Hellabrunn's role in preserving Central African chimpanzees, a subspecies facing severe threats in the wild. The zoo's team continues to monitor the baby's progress while allowing guests to observe the growing family in their habitat.
