Green League Files Complaint Against Construction Plan for Red Bull's Factory - Red Bull's Brandenburg expansion faces legal hurdles over environmental concerns
Red Bull and Rauch are advancing with plans to expand production in Baruth/Mark, Brandenburg. The project involves a new canning plant following the acquisition of local bottler Urstromquelle. However, environmental group Green League Brandenburg has now initiated legal action against the town's zoning plan.
The expansion follows the takeover of Urstromquelle, which previously employed 800 workers in Baruth/Mark. The new facility is expected to increase the workforce from 240 to around 600 employees.
Critics suggest that the companies could utilize an existing water extraction permit of about 2.5 million cubic metres per year—originally granted for Urstromquelle. The firms insist their water usage will not surpass previous levels. Yet environmentalists caution that the project may exacerbate water shortages in the region.
The Green League has identified gaps in the zoning plan, particularly in species protection and compensatory environmental measures. Consequently, the group has filed a legal challenge and requested a temporary suspension of the plan while the case is reviewed.
The legal challenge could postpone the expansion until the court examines the zoning plan's compliance with environmental laws. If approved, the project would significantly bolster local employment but may also intensify concerns over water supply and ecological impact.
