Remote Arctic Village Finally Connects to High-Speed Internet via Satellite
A remote Arctic village has gained access to high-speed internet for the first time. RTComm, a federal satellite operator, has installed a HotSpot in Kazachye, the only inhabited settlement in the Kazachinsky National Legacy. The move aims to connect over a thousand residents living beyond the Arctic Circle. Kazachye sits on the banks of the Yana River in the Ust-Yansky District of Yakutia. The village is cut off from traditional infrastructure, reachable only by air, water, or winter ice roads. Permafrost in the region makes laying cables or building towers nearly impossible, leaving satellite internet as the only viable option.
The HotSpot now provides residents with affordable access to government services, news, and communication tools. Raisa Dmitrieva, a local, shared her gratitude for the new service, highlighting its importance in daily life. Users can connect via Wi-Fi on mobile devices after registering and buying a data package through a dedicated app.
Mikhail Mutterperger, Commercial Director of RTComm.RU JSC, explained that the project focuses on improving digital life in isolated communities. The company plans to expand coverage and develop the network further to reach more users across the region. The HotSpot in Kazachye marks a significant step in bridging the digital divide for Arctic communities. Residents can now access essential online services without relying on costly or unreliable alternatives. RTComm’s ongoing expansion efforts suggest more villages in the region may soon follow.
