Renault's bold 2030 plan: 16 new EVs and a 72% emissions cut

Renault Group has unveiled a sweeping plan to cut emissions and expand its electric vehicle range. By 2030, the company will launch 16 new electric models while slashing energy use in production by a quarter. These moves form part of a broader push to meet stricter climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The carmaker first adopted science-based climate goals in 2019, becoming the first in its sector to do so. Now, it has renewed these commitments with SBTi validation for both short- and long-term plans. A key focus is reducing emissions tied to production and vehicle use (scope 3) by 40% by 2035, compared to 2019 levels.

Operations will also see deep cuts. Renault aims to lower emissions from its own activities (scopes 1 and 2) by 72% within the same timeframe. To support this, the company will boost battery efficiency, targeting a 10% to 40% improvement in energy density by 2030. Materials will play a major role in the transition. By the end of the decade, 30% of steel, aluminium, and polymers used in Renault vehicles will come from the circular economy. The ultimate goal is net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2050, aligning with efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Renault’s updated targets cover every stage of its business, from raw materials to end-of-life recycling. The shift to electric models and cleaner production will form the backbone of its climate strategy. With SBTi approval, the company now has a clear roadmap to meet its 2030, 2035, and 2050 milestones.
