'Ring of Fire' Eclipse to Dazzle Skies Over Argentina and Africa in 2027
A rare annular solar eclipse will darken skies on Saturday, 6 February 2027. The event will create a striking 'ring of fire' as the moon covers most—but not all—of the sun. For up to 7 minutes and 51 seconds, observers in certain regions will see nearly 93% of the sun obscured.
This type of eclipse happens when the moon moves directly between Earth and the sun but is too distant to fully block it. The result is a bright ring, or annulus, encircling the moon's silhouette. On this occasion, the sun will appear slightly larger than usual, while the moon will look a little smaller.
The eclipse's path will stretch across southern Chile and Argentina before moving over West Africa. In Argentina, the best views are expected in northern Patagonia, particularly around the town of El Maitén. Coastal areas like Las Grutas and Laguna La Brava, just south of Buenos Aires, will also offer clear sightlines.
As the eclipse progresses, the path of annularity will cross Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria just before sunset. Over the next five years, four major annular eclipses will occur, with the next total solar eclipse due on 12 August 2026.
Safety remains critical for anyone watching. Special solar eclipse glasses must be worn at all times to prevent eye damage.
The 2027 annular eclipse will give skywatchers in South America and West Africa a chance to witness one of nature's most dramatic displays. With nearly 93% of the sun covered, the event will last longer than most eclipses of its kind. Clear skies and proper eye protection will be essential for a safe and unforgettable experience.
