Satellite networks are facing rising cybersecurity threats that go beyond traditional risks. Researchers have pinpointed distinct vulnerabilities across different orbital zones—Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO). These weaknesses not only endanger operations but also speed up hardware failure and worsen the problem of space debris.

Geostationary satellites are most exposed through radio frequency links, particularly high-frequency uplink attacks. Meanwhile, LEO constellations struggle with power constraints and environmental stresses like thermal shifts and radiation. These factors make them more prone to faults and cyber intrusions.

Weak encryption and poorly secured command systems remain the top predictors of successful breaches in all orbital regimes. Modernising cryptographic methods and tightening command path security are now seen as essential for building resilient space infrastructure. Without these measures, satellites risk premature failure, adding to the growing issue of orbital debris. Energy efficiency in LEO communication protocols and better thermal management in onboard computing units also play a key role. Inefficient systems drain power reserves faster and increase the likelihood of hardware breakdowns. As reliance on satellite networks grows, so does the complexity of cyber-physical threats, making sustainability a pressing concern. Unaddressed cyber vulnerabilities directly undermine efforts to achieve carbon-neutral space operations. When systems fail due to attacks or environmental stress, they contribute to the accumulation of defunct hardware in orbit, creating long-term challenges for responsible space management.

The cybersecurity of satellite systems is now a critical factor in their long-term viability. Strengthening encryption, securing command paths, and improving energy efficiency could reduce failures and limit space debris. Without action, the risks to both operations and environmental sustainability will continue to grow.
