Flood Warning for Bode and Ilse - Saxony-Anhalt braces for flooding as thaw and rain push rivers to the limit
Warmer weather has arrived in Saxony-Anhalt after weeks of freezing conditions. Authorities are now warning of possible flooding as rising temperatures and rain threaten to push river levels higher in the coming days.
The Saxony-Anhalt Flood Forecasting Center has issued a flood alert for parts of the region, particularly along the upper Ilse and Bode rivers. Some gauging stations may surpass the first flood warning threshold as snow melts and water levels rise.
The Bode, which begins in the Harz Mountains and flows through the Magdeburger Börde, is one of the key areas under watch. Rivers in the region are already responding to the thaw, with further increases expected due to the temperature shift.
The German Weather Service predicts highs of up to 13°C (55°F) in the coming days, with no frost forecast—even at higher elevations. Sunday will bring widespread rain, followed by lighter showers on Monday and Tuesday. The flood warning remains active until next Tuesday, as the combination of rain and melting snow could push water levels significantly higher.
While no recent major flooding has been recorded for the Bode and Ilse, the current conditions have raised concerns. Previous mentions of these rivers have focused on ecological and forestry impacts, such as damage in the Fasanerie area near Köthen, rather than high-water events.
Residents and local authorities are advised to stay alert as water levels climb. The forecasted rain and continued thaw will likely keep flood risks elevated until at least Tuesday. Monitoring stations will track changes, particularly in vulnerable upper river sections.
