First Local Banana Crop Ready for Harvest in Sochi

Sochi to harvest its first homegrown bananas by summer 2025

Sochi will begin growing bananas in 2025 as part of a new agricultural project. The city’s unique subtropical climate allows for the cultivation of tropical fruits with minimal energy costs. The first harvest is expected by late summer next year. Three high-tech greenhouses, each spanning 600 square metres, have been constructed for the project. These facilities use AI-driven climate control to manage temperature, humidity, and irrigation automatically. The system ensures ideal conditions for banana growth, which typically takes three to three and a half months from flowering to ripening.

Nineteen different banana varieties—ranging from commercial to dessert types—are being tested in the greenhouses. Alongside bananas, the project is also experimenting with other subtropical and tropical crops, including papaya. Due to the fruit’s sensitivity to long-distance transport, the bananas will be sold exclusively within Sochi. This aligns with the *Choose Sochi-Grown* initiative, which promotes local produce and supports regional farmers.

The project marks the first large-scale banana cultivation attempt in Russia. If successful, it could expand Sochi’s agricultural output while reducing reliance on imported tropical fruits. The initial harvest in July or August 2025 will determine the viability of commercial production.
