South Africa's NCIC 2026 Seeks Bold Cleantech Solutions for Local Growth

South Africa has launched NCIC 2026, a new round of provincial innovation challenges under the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme. The initiative targets nine key market and technology gaps holding back local development. Organisers are now accepting applications until April 21.

The National Cleantech Innovation Challenge (NCIC) 2026 forms part of South Africa's involvement in the UNIDO-backed Global Cleantech Innovation Programme. Since 2014, over 800 local ventures have joined the programme, with hundreds gaining structured support to refine their ideas.

This year's edition features nine province-specific challenges. Each focuses on a distinct barrier, from waste-to-value solutions to renewable energy generation. The goal is to produce market-ready innovations that address real-world problems.

Challenges are structured for practical outcomes. Participants will develop solutions that can be quickly implemented by local innovators. The programme aims to bridge gaps between research and commercial application.

Applications for NCIC 2026 remain open until April 21. Successful entries will tackle provincial development hurdles through targeted cleantech solutions. The initiative continues a long-running effort to boost South Africa's innovation pipeline.
