South Korea launches $285M Dokdo research initiative by 2030
South Korea has announced a major research initiative focused on Dokdo, aiming to deepen scientific understanding of the island's environment. By 2030, the government will invest 433.9 billion won ($285 million) into projects examining volcanic formations, ecological systems, and climate resilience. The research will prioritise the study of Dokdo's volcanic terrain and the management of its protected Natural Reserve. Unmanned technology, including buoys and drones, will gather data to predict changes in the island's maritime conditions.
A key goal is the discovery of new indigenous species and biomaterials. To support this, an integrated platform will be built to combine terrain and ecological data, helping scientists monitor and respond to climate change impacts. Alongside the research, infrastructure upgrades are planned to improve access to Dokdo. Repairs will be carried out in preparation for the future airport on neighbouring Ulleung Island, ensuring smoother logistics for ongoing projects.
The 433.9 billion won budget reflects a long-term commitment to Dokdo's scientific and environmental development. The findings from this research could enhance conservation efforts and strengthen the island's infrastructure. The government expects the initiative to secure better access and sustainable use of the region.
