Spain's New LNG Bunker Vessel Alisios LNG Boosts Cleaner Maritime Fuel Supply

A new LNG bunker vessel, the Alisios LNG, has begun operations along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Commissioned by Axpo and Enagás, the ship aims to meet rising demand for cleaner marine fuels in the shipping sector.

The vessel first entered commercial service in 2023, starting its operations in Barcelona. With a capacity of 12,500 cubic metres of LNG, it can supply enough fuel to match the yearly consumption of 5,000 to 7,000 average EU households. Beyond conventional LNG, the ship is also equipped to transport renewable bio-LNG, a transitional fuel supporting the industry's decarbonisation efforts.

The project directly addresses the shipping industry's shift toward lower-emission propulsion systems. By expanding LNG infrastructure, Spain could cut CO₂ emissions by roughly 2 million tons by 2030. This reduction would be comparable to replacing over one million petrol or diesel vehicles with electric alternatives. Based in Huelva, the *Alisios LNG* will refuel ships along the southern Iberian coast. Its dual-fuel capability aligns with broader goals to reduce maritime pollution while supporting the gradual adoption of greener energy sources.

The Alisios LNG strengthens Spain's position in sustainable maritime fuel supply. Its operations will help lower emissions from shipping and support the transition to cleaner energy. The vessel's capacity and flexibility mark a practical step toward reducing the sector's environmental impact.
