50,000 new trees for Stralsund - Stralsund's Little Trees Initiative plants 50,000 saplings despite spring freezes
Stralsund has begun its latest reforestation push as part of the ongoing Little Trees Initiative. The city aims to plant around 50,000 new trees this spring, though freezing weather recently slowed progress. The first saplings went into the ground last Friday, marking the project's third year in action.
The initiative kicked off on Friday with 1,400 young trees planted across designated areas. Hundreds more followed on Saturday, thanks to parents whose children were born at Helios Hanse Clinic. Their involvement added a community touch to the effort.
Planting had to wait for warmer conditions, as cold snaps delayed the start. Ideal planting time runs only until late April, putting pressure on volunteers and city workers. This spring's work covers roughly 21 hectares, including sites within Stralsund and south of Försterhofer Heide.
Yones Seoudy, Stralsund's second deputy mayor, has backed the scheme since its launch. Now in its third year, the Little Trees Initiative continues to expand green spaces in and around the city.
The project will add thousands of trees to Stralsund's landscape before the planting window closes. With community support and municipal backing, the reforestation drive targets both urban and forested zones. Organisers hope the new growth will strengthen local ecosystems for years to come.
