Sverdlovsk's student startups surge with 170+ bold tech innovations

The Student Startup competition has seen a sharp rise in entries from the Sverdlovsk region this year. Over 170 innovative projects were submitted, with the Ural Federal University (UrFU) leading the way. The contest forms part of the federal Technologies initiative, offering grants to promising student-led ventures. UrFU alone put forward more than 130 projects, doubling its participation compared to last year. The Institute of Physics and Technology, the Institute of Economics and Management, and the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies (IREIT-RTF) contributed the most entries. Submissions covered diverse fields, from AI-driven digital assistants to advanced fire suppression systems and unmanned vehicle technology.

Each project undergoes evaluation across seven priority areas of Russia's scientific and technological development. Many of the proposals have already been recognised as official know-how, adding to UrFU's intellectual property portfolio. Semifinalists will soon present their work to a judging panel, which will award the finalists. The top teams will each receive a 1 million-ruble grant to further develop their innovations.

The competition highlights growing student engagement in applied research and entrepreneurship. With federal funding and institutional support, the winning projects will move closer to real-world implementation. The grants aim to turn academic ideas into viable technological solutions.
