Sword Health's AI-Powered App Redefines Patient Care with Human Oversight

Sword Health, the Portuguese unicorn valued at $4 billion, is rolling out a major update to its app. Known internally as Chapter 2, the redesign introduces a three-way chat involving the user, an AI assistant named Phoenix, and a human physical therapist. The goal is to create a more personal and responsive experience for patients.

The updated app will allow Phoenix to engage in conversations where it can admit uncertainty and escalate questions to a human therapist when needed. This approach aims to make users feel genuinely heard while keeping clinical oversight intact. Sword Health stresses that, despite AI handling routine interactions, critical decisions—such as diagnoses, medication, or clearance for physical activity—remain in the hands of licensed professionals.

Catarina Farinha, Product Manager at Sword Health, recently discussed the changes on The Future of the Future podcast by Expresso. The episode, now available on Expresso's website, SIC, SIC Notícias, and other major podcast platforms, highlights how the company balances AI efficiency with human expertise. Farinha emphasised that the app's design ensures a clinician is always involved, reinforcing the idea of human-in-the-loop care.

The redesign reflects Sword Health's broader mission to scale healthcare access without sacrificing quality. By integrating AI for routine support and reserving complex decisions for therapists, the company aims to improve both efficiency and patient trust.

The new app version marks a shift in how Sword Health delivers care, blending AI assistance with human judgement. Patients will interact with a system that adapts to their needs while maintaining professional oversight. The update is set to roll out as the company continues expanding its reach in digital physical therapy.
