State Forest Authority Counts 49 Forest Fires for 2025 - Thuringia's 2025 Wildfires Shatter Records as 1,200 Hectares Burn in a Single Blaze

Thuringia faced its worst forest fire season in recorded history in 2025. A total of 85.7 hectares burned across the state, with one massive blaze near Gösselsdorf accounting for nearly all the damage. Officials reported 49 wildfires, a sharp rise from the previous year's total of 33.

The most destructive fire erupted on the Saalfeld Heights, close to the village of Gösselsdorf. It tore through roughly 1,200 hectares of forest, mostly coniferous trees, centred around coordinates 50.58°N, 11.35°E. This single incident made 2025 the worst year for forest fires in Thuringia's records.

The year saw unusually dry conditions, with rainfall far below 2024 levels. This drought contributed to the spike in fires, particularly in April, May, and July, which recorded 10, 11, and 12 blazes respectively. August, by contrast, saw only three fires.

Investigations into the causes revealed that 18% of the fires were deliberately set, while 14% resulted from carelessness. A further 1% was linked to a traffic accident. However, the origin of 65% of the fires remained unknown.

Historical data shows that only two years since 1995 had more wildfires: 2003, with 90 incidents, and 2022, with 70.

The 2025 wildfires left a significant mark on Thuringia's forests. The total burned area reached 85.7 hectares, with one fire alone destroying 1,200 hectares. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as climate conditions and human activity shape future risks.
