TotalEnergies smashes 2025 sustainability targets with record emissions cuts

TotalEnergies has released its latest sustainability results, showing significant progress in cutting emissions and expanding renewable energy. The company's 2025 figures reveal stronger-than-expected reductions in greenhouse gases, methane leaks, and carbon intensity—all while increasing electricity production from low-carbon sources.

A public webcast will be held today, where Aurélien Hamelle, President of Strategy and Sustainability, will outline these findings and answer questions from stakeholders. The company's lifecycle carbon intensity for energy products sold has dropped by 18.6% since 2015. This exceeds its original 17% reduction target. Emissions intensity now sits below 16 kg CO₂e per barrel of oil equivalent, a new internal benchmark for all future projects.

Operated greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas facilities have fallen by 38% compared to 2015 levels. Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2025 totalled 33.1 million tonnes—well under the 37 million tonne goal set for the year. Methane emissions alone have been cut by 65% since 2020, surpassing the initial 60% target ahead of schedule.

On the renewable energy front, TotalEnergies' net electricity production reached 48 terawatt-hours in 2025. This accounts for roughly 10% of its hydrocarbon output. In the US, the company has installed 10 GW of solar, onshore wind, and battery capacity. A separate 12 GW development partnership in Brazil has been active since 2022.

The report also confirms alignment with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This move prepares the company for stricter transparency and comparability rules in future ESG disclosures.

These results come as TotalEnergies tests its multi-energy model—a strategy blending fossil fuels with renewables. With 2030 targets approaching, the next phase will determine whether this momentum can be maintained under growing scrutiny. TotalEnergies has outpaced several of its own sustainability goals, including cuts in carbon intensity, methane emissions, and overall greenhouse gases. The company's renewable energy capacity has also grown, now representing a tenth of its hydrocarbon production.

The findings will be discussed in detail during today's webcast, where executives will address how these achievements position the firm for tighter regulations and future climate commitments.
