Raids following discovery of dead birds of prey - Toxic bait kills 17 rare raptors in Bavaria's latest wildlife poisoning case

A series of wildlife poisonings has raised concerns in the Dingolfing-Landau district. Over the past five years, 12 cases involving poisoned foxes and birds of prey were recorded. Now, another incident in the summer of 2025 has brought the issue back into focus.

In July 2025, 17 dead birds—including strictly protected raptors—were discovered near Simbach, close to Landau. Authorities suspect the animals ingested bait laced with carbofuran, a banned pesticide. The deaths prompted an immediate investigation.

Police took action in late February by seizing mobile phones from six witnesses. Forensic experts are now examining the devices for potential links to the illegal killings. Prosecutors have confirmed they are actively pursuing new leads in the case.

This latest incident follows a troubling pattern. Between 2021 and 2025, the district documented 12 similar cases of poisoned wildlife, primarily foxes and birds of prey. Both the local council and NABU have expressed alarm over the recurring problem.

The investigation into the poisoned birds continues, with authorities analysing digital evidence for clues. If confirmed, the use of carbofuran would violate strict wildlife protection laws. The case remains open as officials work to identify those responsible.
