Vienna's New Exotic Animal Clinic Offers Cutting-Edge Care for Rare Species
A new veterinary clinic for exotic animals has opened in Vienna's Mariahilf district, near Haus des Meeres. The facility provides specialized care for rare species, including those from the city's Aqua Terra Zoo. Zoo director Jeff Schreiner has called the clinic a major step forward for veterinary medicine in the region.
The clinic offers advanced medical services tailored to exotic animals. Equipment includes digital X-ray machines, ultrasound scanners, and an on-site laboratory. This setup allows many tests and treatments to be carried out without delay.
Among the patients are the zoo's sea turtles, ring-tailed lemurs, and sharks. Even 'Puppi,' the zoo's well-known sea turtle, recently received an ultrasound exam during a house call. The clinic's expertise extends beyond zoo residents, as it also treats exotic pets owned by the public.
The facility is not limited to unusual species. Dogs, cats, and small mammals can also receive care there. Schreiner described the project as a 'long-held dream,' combining cutting-edge diagnostics with deep knowledge of exotic animal health.
The new clinic fills a gap in Vienna's veterinary services by focusing on exotic species. It supports both zoo animals and privately owned pets with specialized equipment and staff. The opening marks a significant expansion of care options for rare and unusual animals in the area.
