Western Balkans unites to restore ecosystems through policy and action

A two-day conference on ecosystem restoration has begun in the Western Balkans, bringing together government officials and key stakeholders. Organised by UNICEF and North Macedonia’s Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the event focuses on turning policy into action. Discussions will centre on financing, partnerships, and practical steps to scale up Nature-based Solutions across the region. The Western Balkans Restoration Conference aims to address growing threats to local ecosystems. Unsustainable resource use, pollution, land-use changes, and climate impacts have weakened biodiversity and resilience in the area. Representatives are now exploring ways to reverse these trends through coordinated efforts.

The draft WB6 Forest Landscape Restoration Plan is being presented during the event. This plan forms part of broader efforts to implement the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and align with regional policy frameworks. Vlatko Trpeski, Head of the Department of Nature in North Macedonia’s Ministry of Environment, stressed the need for joint action to restore ecosystems and expand Nature-based Solutions.

Financing for nature remains a key topic. Delegates are examining how to mobilise and direct investments toward scalable projects. Sweden is supporting these goals through initiatives like ADAPT 2.0, which promotes regional cooperation in ecosystem restoration.

UNICEF is working alongside partners to strengthen collaboration and translate policy promises into real-world progress. The conference marks a shift from planning to implementation, with a focus on building partnerships and securing funding for long-term restoration work. The conference seeks to accelerate ecosystem recovery in the Western Balkans by fostering regional teamwork and securing financial backing. Outcomes will include clearer strategies for financing, partnerships, and on-the-ground restoration projects. These steps are expected to support the Green Agenda and improve environmental resilience across the region.
