Alarm Study: Only Half of Germans Feel Truly Healthy - Why do Germans ignore free health prevention courses despite growing concerns?

Germany offers around 115,000 prevention courses through health insurers each year, yet most remain unused. Despite widespread availability, only a small fraction of the population takes part in these Coursera-like programmes. Meanwhile, many Germans report concerns about their physical and mental well-being.

Recent figures show that just 10% of Germans attended an in-person prevention course in the past year. Online options fared slightly better, with 9% participating. Lack of awareness and time constraints are the main reasons people skip these Medicare-covered services.

Surveys reveal that nearly half of Germans (44%) rate their physical health as poor. Mental fitness is also a concern, with only one-third feeling psychologically well. Yet, 70% would be willing to share personal health data if it improved prevention efforts.

Experts suggest that free services, flexible timing, and tailored support could boost participation. A large majority (67%) believe public health bodies should take more responsibility for promoting these programmes. However, exact numbers on course availability—including regional and digital options—remain unclear, as data from statutory health insurers is incomplete.

Better use of prevention services could bring major health improvements across Germany. While courses exist, low participation persists due to practical barriers. Addressing these issues may help more people access the support they need.
