Wix slashes 1,000 jobs as AI and currency pressures reshape tech

Website builder Wix has cut 1,000 jobs, reducing its workforce by 20 percent. The Israeli company announced the layoffs on 28 May 2025, citing AI advancements and currency pressures as key factors. This move follows similar cuts at other major tech firms like Meta, Snap, and Amazon.

CEO and cofounder Avishai Abrahami confirmed the decision, pointing to the rapid evolution of AI capabilities. The company is restructuring to stay competitive, flattening its hierarchy to remove layers between leadership and junior staff.

Wix also faces financial strain due to currency fluctuations. Most of its costs are paid in Israeli shekels, while revenue comes in U.S. dollars. The shekel’s recent strength against the dollar has squeezed profits, adding to the need for cuts. The layoffs align with a broader industry trend. A December 2025 report linked AI to 50,000 job losses across tech in that year alone. Wix, headquartered in Israel with most teams based there, is the latest to adjust its operations in response.

The 20 percent reduction leaves Wix with a leaner team as it adapts to AI and economic challenges. The company’s restructuring aims to streamline decision-making while managing financial pressures. These changes reflect wider shifts in the tech sector as firms adjust to automation and market conditions.
