Wolfenbüttel's Bold Leap Toward 100% Local, Carbon-Neutral Energy by 2027
Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel has strengthened its commitment to renewable energy with two major agreements. The company will soon source all electricity from a new Lower Saxony wind park, while also securing future solar power from the planned Kissenbrück solar park. These deals form part of a broader push to provide customers with locally generated, CO₂-neutral energy.
The latest agreement, a pay-as-forecasted power purchase deal, was signed with Uniper. Under the terms, Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel will receive the full output from a wind park in Lower Saxony, consisting of six turbines. This will deliver roughly 9 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year, covering about 15% of the company's customer demand.
The move follows another recent deal with the upcoming Kissenbrück solar park. From 2027, this facility will supply around 17 million kilowatt-hours of solar power annually. Both projects align with Stadtwerke's strategy of sourcing 100% of its electricity regionally, ensuring all power comes from within Lower Saxony. Vera Steiner, the company's commercial managing director and spokesperson, highlighted that sustainable energy remains central to their corporate approach. By securing these agreements, Stadtwerke reinforces its position as a dependable supplier of carbon-neutral electricity to its customers.
The two deals mark Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel's latest steps in expanding its renewable energy portfolio. With wind and solar power now locked in, the company will continue offering locally sourced, CO₂-free electricity. No further regional wind or solar additions have been confirmed beyond these projects in the past five years.
