Workshop unites experts to combat bonded labour through justice and advocacy

A workshop on Freedom, Equality and Social Justice was recently held to tackle the issue of bonded labour. Organised by VIT-AP University, the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA), and International Justice Mission (IJM), the event brought together officials, volunteers, and experts. The focus was on educating participants about the abolition of bonded labour and reinforcing collective responsibility to end the practice.

The workshop began with an inauguration by Justice Ch. Manavendranath Roy, Executive Chairman of APSLSA. Attendees included stakeholders from various state departments, along with paralegal volunteers committed to the cause.

The first technical session was chaired by Justice A.V. Sesha Sai. He examined judicial precedents and the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, while highlighting the achievements of the Warriers—a group actively working to eradicate bonded labour. Statistics on their progress were shared to underscore the ongoing events.

In the second session, discussions centred on improving interdepartmental cooperation. Participants explored ways to strengthen collaboration between agencies to meet key milestones in bonded labour eradication.

The final session addressed the role of social welfare departments in supporting vulnerable communities. It concluded with reflections on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's principles of liberty, dignity, and justice. An audio song and poster were also launched during the event to raise awareness.

The workshop aimed to ensure that participants left with a clearer understanding of bonded labour abolition. By emphasising individual and institutional responsibility, the organisers sought to drive further action. The event reinforced the need for continued efforts to secure justice and dignity for affected communities.
