Yulia Gorbunova appointed as Skoltech's new rector in 2023 leadership shift

Igor Shuvalov, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) and Chairman of VEB.RF, introduced the university's new rector, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) academician Yulia Gorbunova, to staff and students. This was announced by the state corporation's press service.

"Yulia Germanovna Gorbunova has extensive experience, graduated from Moscow State University, is an academician, and has built an impressive academic career with a vast body of work. She has demonstrated a strong commitment to embracing Skoltech's achievements as a major success for Russia's scientific and educational system," Shuvalov noted.

Shuvalov assumed the role of Skoltech's Board of Trustees Chairman on April 3. On the same day, Yulia Gorbunova was appointed rector of the institute. The Skoltech Board of Trustees is a collegial governing body responsible for the university's strategic development and oversight, including budget approval, major projects, and the appointment and evaluation of the rector's performance.

Yulia Gorbunova is a leading Russian chemist and the author of over 550 scientific publications. She serves as a principal researcher at two RAS institutes: the N.S. Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and the A.N. Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry. As Skoltech's rector, she succeeds Alexander Safonov, who had been acting rector following the end of Alexander Kuleshov's term. Kuleshov, who led Skoltech since 2016, will now take on the role of the university's chief architect.

"In our rapidly changing world, we face a dual challenge: to preserve and strengthen our current standing while ensuring the institute's qualitative development in response to new scientific and technological demands. Therefore, I see several key priorities for our work," Gorbunova stated. Among these, she highlighted improving the quality of research, advancing entrepreneurial and technological initiatives, and fostering scientific collaboration.
