Archer Aviation and AST SpaceMobile race to revolutionize air and space travel

Two major players in the emerging space and aviation sectors are making significant strides. Archer Aviation is preparing to launch its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) services in the UAE as early as next year. Meanwhile, AST SpaceMobile is rapidly expanding its satellite network, aiming to revolutionise mobile broadband coverage from space.

Both companies are advancing quickly, but their timelines and market approaches differ. Archer Aviation is pushing to bring its eVTOL vehicles to paying customers in the UAE by next year. The company expects to secure the necessary certifications for operations in the second half of 2025. CEO Adam Goldstein is leading the effort, while CTO Tom Muniz oversees engineering and the critical Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval process in the US. In 2024, Archer acquired Lilium's patents to speed up certification and has shifted focus toward partnerships, such as one with Fiat Chrysler, to cut costs.

The company's strategy contrasts with competitors like Joby Aviation, which is prioritising White House pilot programs and app-based services, and Boeing Wisk Aero, which is developing autonomous flight technology.

AST SpaceMobile, on the other hand, is already deploying its BlueBird satellites and plans to launch a new batch every 45 days throughout next year. By the end of 2026, it expects to have between 45 and 60 satellites in orbit. The company has secured major deals, including a $100 million agreement with Verizon Communications for services starting in 2026 and a long-term partnership with AT&T to provide broadband coverage for standard cellphones until 2030.

Industry forecasts suggest the space economy could grow to $1.8 trillion by 2035, highlighting the potential for both companies in their respective fields. Archer Aviation's eVTOL services could begin in the UAE once certifications are in place. AST SpaceMobile, with its satellite deployments and major telecom partnerships, is further ahead in its development timeline. Both companies are positioning themselves to capitalise on the expanding space and aviation markets.
