Berlin's Floating Museum Revives 150-Year-Old Ships at Historic Port

Old ships are moored at the historic port at the Mühlendammschleuse in Berlin-Mitte. Exhibitions on board show their significance for Berlin's urban development.

The Historischer Hafen Berlin (Historic Port of Berlin) on Fischerinsel was first mentioned in documents in 1298. Today it is run by an association dedicated to the restoration and operation of historic barges. The museum ships are moored along the Friedrichsgracht to the Märkisches Ufer. They are used for cultural, social and gastronomic purposes. The collection includes steam tugs, motor tugs, raft tugs, motor vessels, launches, ferries, schokkers and steam icebreakers.

Historischer Hafen: Highlights

The oldest of the ships in the historic harbor dates back to 1863. An exhibition barge offers various exhibitions on the history of inland navigation as well as a floating harbor bar. The exhibitions mainly document the role of inland navigation in the Mark Brandenburg, but also cover topics such as the history of urban and regional development, shipbuilding and ship types, the development of the Mark Brandenburg and Berlin waterways and life on board.

Information

The exhibition is currently closed due to renovation work.
