Berlin's Left Party has unveiled a plan for new Care Centers that would mix healthcare, culture, and community activities. The proposal is part of their Caring City Action Plan, adopted just before International Women's Day. These centres would offer everything from medical support to art workshops—all without commercial pressure.
The centres would be publicly owned but run democratically by local neighbourhood councils. Residents could take part in decisions about how the spaces operate. Inside, visitors would find healthcare services alongside cultural events, self-help groups, and open workshops.
The party wants to move care work away from private households and turn it into a shared responsibility. Instead of families handling everything alone, the centres would provide a collective solution. The first step is a pilot project, though no specific locations in Berlin have been chosen yet.
Possible sites include state-owned buildings or newly constructed spaces. The goal is to create welcoming hubs where people can access support, socialise, and organise—all in one place.
The Left Party's plan focuses on easing the burden of unpaid care work while fostering community ties. If the pilot succeeds, more centres could follow across Berlin. For now, the search for a suitable location and funding remains the next challenge.
