Berlin's Tierpark has long been a favourite for families and wildlife lovers. Spanning 160 hectares, it stands as Europe's largest landscape zoo. The site blends historic architecture with modern exhibits, offering visitors a mix of rare animals and interactive experiences.
The Tierpark first opened in 1955 and now houses around 10,000 animals from roughly 104 species. Recent years have seen a focus on endangered creatures, including Vietnam pheasants, Amur thrushes, and blue-throated macaws. Breeding programmes have also achieved first-time successes with species like the Spanish ribbed newt and rainbowfish.
Historic buildings add character to the park. Friedrichsfelde Palace, near the main entrance, serves as a grand centrepiece. The Alfred Brehm House, reopened in 2020, now showcases Southeast Asian wildlife in its Rainforest House.
New attractions continue to draw crowds. Otter Island, launched at Easter 2024, lets visitors observe Asian small-clawed otters, Visayan warty pigs, and crested macaques together. A walk-through kangaroo enclosure, a petting zoo, and the Variwald lemur habitat provide hands-on encounters. For younger guests, the Fable Forest and water playgrounds offer space to explore.
Special exhibitions add variety. Dinoworld, featuring life-sized dinosaur models, runs until October 2025. Meanwhile, the Himalaya area remains a highlight, home to snow leopards and bearded vultures. Conservation efforts are supported through public donations and sponsorships, helping expand populations of threatened species.
The Tierpark's mix of historic charm and modern conservation keeps it a key attraction in Berlin. With ongoing breeding programmes and new exhibits, the zoo continues to grow its role in wildlife protection. Visitors can expect both rare animal sightings and family-friendly activities throughout the year.
