Davao's Bucana Bridge stays open after 7.8 quake causes minor damage
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake recently struck Davao City, prompting inspections of local infrastructure. DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that the Bucana Bridge remains safe despite sustaining minor damage. The bridge will stay open, and no major road closures are expected in the city. The earthquake caused minor damage to the Bucana Bridge, particularly in its expansion joint and both approaches. Sidewalks on the bridge also require repairs. However, the damage is not structural, and the bridge’s key components remain intact.
The bearings of the Bucana Bridge helped absorb the vibrations during the quake. DPWH has inspected other infrastructures in Davao City and confirmed they are all safe. Repairs to the Bucana Bridge are expected to take three to five days.
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has instructed national agencies to assist the Davao Region. Priority areas for aid include schools in Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, and Davao del Sur. The Bucana Bridge will remain operational throughout the repair period. No major disruptions to city roads are anticipated. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide support to affected areas.
