Huayamilpas Ecological Park has entered the next stage of its recovery. On Monday, Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez officially launched the third phase of rehabilitation efforts. This time, the focus shifts to restoring the park’s lake and its wildlife, including the rescue of 17 ducks last week. The park’s rehabilitation has followed a structured plan. The first two phases improved sports courts, children’s play areas, restrooms, and lighting. New twin soccer fields, a skatepark, and a roller-skating rink were also added.
Now, attention turns to the lake. A multidisciplinary team—made up of federal and local authorities, environmentalists, biologists, and technicians—has been assembled. Their task involves environmental, biological, and technical expertise, along with managing the park’s flora and fauna. Last week, 17 ducks were carefully rescued from the lake. Each bird was examined, registered with an identification record, and moved to a shelter for veterinary care. The relocation marks the start of broader efforts to restore the lake’s ecosystem. The Coyoacán borough government, supported by federal agencies and Mexico City authorities, is leading the work. Specialists will now tackle water quality, habitat recovery, and long-term sustainability for the lake and its wildlife.
The third phase of rehabilitation is now underway. The rescued ducks remain under veterinary supervision, while the team prepares for further restoration. If successful, the project will improve both the lake’s health and the park’s overall environment.
