Koblenz's riverside promenade collapses after Moselle River erosion from flooding
A section of the pedestrian path beneath Koblenz's Europabrücke has collapsed after heavy erosion from the Moselle River's flood warning waters. The damage has forced authorities to close off the area and redirect walkers to a temporary detour along the nearby roadway.
The collapse occurred after the Moselle's high waters weakened the riverbank's reinforcement. As the flood warning waters receded, they further destabilised the ground beneath the Peter-Altmeier riverside promenade. The city has now secured the site with sandbags to halt additional slippage and cordoned off the unsafe stretch.
Repairs will not start until water levels drop further and the Waterways and Shipping Authority approves the work. Following the last major flood in June 2021, the promenade took around 18 months to fully restore, with completion in December 2022.
In the meantime, pedestrians must follow the designated detour on the adjacent road. The city administration has asked all road users to remain cautious and attentive in the area.
The collapse has disrupted access to a key section of the riverside walkway. Repairs will depend on the Moselle's water levels and official coordination. Until then, the detour and safety measures will remain in place.
