Leopoldina becomes a venue for art focused on autonomy - Leopoldina merges science and art with bold new installations on autonomy

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina will host two large-scale art installations at its Halle headquarters. The works, set to debut on August 21, mark a rare collaboration between the academy and the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt.

Two artists have been chosen to bring this year's Annual Assembly theme, Autonomy, to life. Sculptor Julia Schleicher will create an indoor piece titled Autonomy of the Doll. Her installation features oversized cocoons and doll-like figures, exploring the transformation within an insect's protective shell.

Outside the academy, artist collective Klub7 will construct Collective Autonomy. The outdoor work combines wood, fabrics, sound, and light—elements designed to extend beyond the grounds. Visitors will experience the piece both visually and aurally.

The Leopoldina's Annual Assembly follows on September 24 and 25. While the academy has rarely engaged with art in the past, this project signals a new direction. Previous references to art in its work were limited to depictions of Albert Einstein, with no active involvement in creative initiatives.

The installations will remain on display during the Annual Assembly. Schleicher's cocoon-inspired sculptures and Klub7's immersive outdoor work will offer contrasting interpretations of autonomy. Both projects are the result of the academy's partnership with the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt.
