Maharashtra Plans EV Charging Stations Under Flyovers For MSRTC's 'Lal Pari' Electric Bus Fleet Expansion

Maharashtra turns flyovers into charging hubs for electric buses by 2035

The Maharashtra government is exploring new ways to expand electric vehicle infrastructure by repurposing unused spaces. Officials have proposed setting up charging stations for electric buses under flyovers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The move aims to support the state’s growing fleet of eco-friendly public transport vehicles. A recent high-level meeting focused on improving charging facilities for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The discussion highlighted the need for more stations as the agency prepares to transition its entire bus fleet to electric by 2035. Officials suggested using vacant areas beneath flyovers managed by the MMRDA, MSRDC, and Public Works Department.

The government has instructed these agencies to survey potential sites for charging hubs. Funding options include state support, self-financing, and public-private partnerships (PPP). MSRTC itself plans to establish at least 200 charging stations statewide under the PPP model.

Maharashtra’s broader Electric Vehicle Policy targets a shift to electric mobility for most vehicles by 2047. Strengthening charging infrastructure is seen as key to boosting the efficiency of electric buses and improving public transport services across the state. The initiative could turn underused urban spaces into functional charging points for electric buses. With 200 new stations planned and a 2035 deadline for a fully electric fleet, the project aligns with Maharashtra’s long-term sustainability goals. Better infrastructure is expected to make electric public transport more reliable for daily commuters.
