Moscow's Biryulyovskaya metro line expands with new Luganskaya station upgrades

Moscow's Biryulyovskaya metro line is expanding with new infrastructure at the Luganskaya station. Work has begun on turnback sidings, designed to improve train operations in the city's southern districts. The project includes major excavation and modern construction techniques to support the growing network.

The Luganskaya station site is undergoing significant changes. A foundation pit is being dug using the 'diaphragm wall' method, featuring a 1-metre-thick reinforced concrete wall stretching 705 metres. Steel struts and walers reinforce the structure, ensuring stability during construction.

Over 221,000 cubic metres of soil will be removed from the area. The turnback sidings, measuring over 300 metres long, are being built via the open-cut method across 7.7 hectares. These facilities will help manage train movements more efficiently.

The Biryulyovskaya line, also known as Line 15, will eventually serve key southern districts, including Danilovsky, Nagatinsky Zaton, and Biryulyovo. By 2026, five new stations—Novoyasenevskaya, Biryulyovo Zapadnoye, Biryulyovo Vostochnoye, Keletskaya, and Tyoply Stan Vostochnyy—will be operational. Three more stations (ZIL-2, Proektiruyemaya, and Paveletskaya-2) remain in planning.

Mosinzhproekt JSC, the general designer and contractor, has overseen major metro projects since 2011. The company has built or upgraded 84 stations and more than 180 kilometres of track. Once complete, the Luganskaya station area will also receive landscaping improvements.

The expansion of the Biryulyovskaya line will enhance transport links across southern Moscow. The new turnback sidings and station upgrades aim to streamline metro operations. Further developments are expected as the network continues to grow.
