Suzuki's electric Vitara splits Australia and New Zealand with battery options
Suzuki's electric Vitara is arriving in Australia with two battery options—but New Zealand may not get the smaller one. The 49kWh version, priced under AU$40,000, is set for a mid-2026 launch in Australia, while New Zealand's market remains focused on the larger 61kWh model. Customer demand and historical preferences are shaping the different approaches across the two countries. In Australia, the 49kWh e Vitara (Motion variant) will hit showrooms in June or July 2026. This entry-level model promises up to 344km of range in 2WD mode and is expected to cost less than AU$40,000 (NZ$47,800). Suzuki has chosen not to offer a shorter-range EV, believing buyers prefer longer distances between charges.
Across the Tasman, Suzuki New Zealand currently sells only the 61kWh AWD e Vitara, which delivers up to 426km in 2WD mode. CEO Gary Collins points to past market feedback, where buyers consistently favoured EVs with greater range. While the company hasn't ruled out the 49kWh model, it would take around eight months to introduce. For now, New Zealand's branch remains unconvinced a smaller battery would sell well. Sales data for the 49kWh variant doesn't yet exist, as the model hasn't launched in either market. Suzuki New Zealand has stated it would consider the option if customer demand grows, but no plans are currently in place.
The 49kWh e Vitara will soon give Australian buyers a more affordable electric SUV choice. In New Zealand, the focus stays on the larger battery, reflecting local preferences for extended range. Suzuki's differing strategies highlight how regional demand is guiding its electric vehicle rollout.
