Zurich City Hospital Launches Integrated Spine Center for Complex Disorders
Zurich City Hospital has opened a new Spine Center to improve care for patients with complex spinal disorders. The facility brings together specialists from neurosurgery, rheumatology, neurology, radiology, orthopaedics, and pain management under one roof. Until now, these conditions were treated separately across different departments and locations within the hospital. The centre aims to provide more integrated and patient-focused treatment. Spinal disorders often involve multiple underlying causes, requiring input from various medical fields. To address this, the Spine Center includes a Spine Board—an interdisciplinary panel that reviews complex cases and decides on the best treatment approach.
Previously, patients with complicated spinal issues had to navigate different specialties independently. The new system ensures closer collaboration among all relevant experts, reducing delays in diagnosis and therapy. This model follows a growing trend in Swiss hospitals, where interdisciplinary teams work together to deliver faster, more tailored care. PD Dr. Daniel Coluccia, head of the Spine Center, also serves as chief physician of neurosurgery and spinal surgery at Zurich City Hospital. His leadership reinforces the hospital's commitment to a unified approach in treating spinal conditions.
The Spine Center marks a shift toward more coordinated care for spinal patients at Zurich City Hospital. By combining expertise from multiple specialties, the hospital expects to improve diagnosis speed and treatment outcomes. The new system also aligns with broader efforts in Swiss healthcare to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration.
